Khuldabad, meaning City of Eternity, is a small walled town 24 km from Aurangabad and 3 km from Ellora, historically known as the Valley of Saints for the many Sufi dargahs within its walls. The town's principal draw is the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, a deliberately simple earth-covered grave open to the sky in the courtyard of the dargah of Sheikh Zainuddin Shirazi, in keeping with the emperor's austere instructions. Other notable shrines include those of Malik Ambar and Mughal general Aurangzeb's son. Bhadra Maruti Temple is also within the town.
