Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site around 100 km from Aurangabad, comprise 30 rock-cut Buddhist prayer halls and monasteries hollowed into a horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora River. Dating from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD, the caves are celebrated worldwide for their extraordinary painted murals depicting the Jataka tales and the life of the Buddha, considered the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian painting. The remote wooded gorge setting adds to the experience of visiting one of the subcontinent's most significant artistic treasures.
