Auli Artificial Lake sits near the upper ski slopes and is often called one of the world's highest man-made lakes. The Uttarakhand government built it as a reservoir for snow guns that keep the ski season going when natural snowfall is thin. A chairlift from the ropeway top reaches the lake edge, where Nanda Devi reflects on still mornings. Stay in Auli and walk or ride up in the late afternoon for sunset colour on the water.
