Shri Ram Tirath Temple

An ancient temple near Amritsar believed to mark the site of Maharishi Valmiki's ashram where Sita gave birth to Luv and Kush after her exile.

Shri Ram Tirath Temple near Amritsar is one of the most significant sites in the Ramayana pilgrimage tradition of Punjab, believed to mark the location of the ashram of Maharishi Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana. According to the epic, this is where Goddess Sita took refuge after her exile from Ayodhya and where she gave birth to Luv and Kush, the twin sons of Lord Rama. The complex includes a sacred tank called the Ram Tirath Sarovar, where devotees take ritual dips, and several shrines dedicated to Lord Rama, Sita, Valmiki, and the twin princes. The annual Ram Tirath Mela held here in October draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across North India and is one of the largest religious fairs in Punjab. The peaceful setting and deep Ramayana associations make it an important destination for those following the epic trail through North India.
