Mata Lal Devi Temple

A unique and colourful temple in Amritsar dedicated to Mata Lal Devi, famous for its labyrinthine underground passages, mirrored interiors, and vibrant folk devotion.

Mata Lal Devi Temple in Rani Ka Bagh, Amritsar, is one of the most visually striking temples in Punjab, dedicated to Mata Lal Devi, a revered saint who lived in the early 20th century and is believed to have had miraculous powers of healing. The temple is famous for its extraordinary labyrinthine interior: devotees crawl through a series of narrow underground passages, caves, and tunnels representing the mythological cave dwellings of Hindu tradition, emerging at shrines dedicated to various deities along the way. The walls and ceilings throughout are covered in mirror mosaic work, colourful glass tiles, and glittering ornamentation, creating a dazzling sensory experience unlike any other temple in North India. The route through the passages is believed to cleanse devotees of sins and fulfil wishes. The complex also includes a large tank and open-air shrines. The temple draws pilgrims from across Punjab and beyond, particularly on Sundays and during Navratri.
