Durgiana Temple

Durgiana Temple in Amritsar is one of the most important Hindu temples in Punjab, dedicated to Goddess Durga. Built in the early 20th century and modelled architecturally on the Golden Temple, the complex is set around a large sacred water tank (sarovar) with the white marble temple rising from its centre, connected to the entrance by a causeway. The shikhara (tower) is gilded, giving the temple a visual resonance with its Sikh neighbour. The complex also houses a shrine to Lord Hanuman called Laxmi Narayan Mandir, and a silver-doored inner sanctum containing the main idol of Goddess Durga. Durgiana is especially crowded during Navratri and on Ashtami, when thousands of devotees perform ritual worship. The temple is also known for a small shrine believed to mark the spot where Sita's footprints fell during her exile, making it a site of Ramayana pilgrimage as well. The adjacent ashram of the Durgiana Trust runs charitable and educational activities for the local community.
