Buxa Tiger Reserve covers about 760 sq km of forest in Alipurduar district of northern West Bengal, rising from the plains to around 1,750 m at the Bhutan border. It is known more for its forests, rivers and birdlife than for tigers, with at least 284 bird species, elephants, gaur, sambar, leopards and clouded leopards recorded.

The reserve is popular for forest drives, the walk up to the old Buxa Fort, and stays in forest villages such as Jayanti on the Jayanti river. Rajabhatkhawa is the main entry and Forest Department office. Check current entry permits and timings before you go.

  • How to Reach: Rajabhatkhawa, the main entry, is about 15 km from Alipurduar. Alipurduar Junction is the nearest major railway station.
