Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple

One of the oldest and most revered Krishna temples in Kerala, famous for its traditional architecture and the legendary Palpayasam sweet rice pudding served daily.

Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple is one of the most celebrated temples in Kerala, located about 14 km from Alappuzha town. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is believed to have been established several centuries ago by the Chempakasserry Raja following divine instruction. The architecture is a classic example of Kerala temple style with a tiered copper-tiled roof and intricately carved wooden structures. The temple is inseparably associated with its famous Palpayasam, a sweet rice pudding made with milk, rice, and sugar that is served to devotees every day. According to legend, the recipe was given by Krishna himself who lost it in a game of chess with a sage and promised to serve the payasam to devotees forever. The temple is also closely linked to the history of the Kuttanad boat races.
