Lad Khan Temple is one of Aihole's earliest structural experiments, with a square hall plan, large porch, and a flat two-tier stone roof that looks more like a village assembly hall than a later vimana shrine. A small rooftop shrine sits where a tower would appear in later temples. It sits close to Durga Temple inside the main group, so you can compare flat-roof and apsidal designs in one walk. Allow time for the carved pillars and the unusual roof logs in stone.
