Durga Temple

Apsidal Early Chalukya temple in Aihole's main complex, known for its chaitya-like plan.

Durga Temple is Aihole's best-known Early Chalukya shrine, famous for its apsidal plan that echoes a Buddhist chaitya hall. A raised ambulatory wraps the sanctum, and the outer walls carry niches of Vishnu, Shiva, and Devi forms under a northern-style shikhara. Travelers use it as the anchor stop in the main ASI enclosure. Visit in the morning for softer light on the sandstone and fewer school groups.
