Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 18.5 sq km in the Bishalgarh area about 25 km from Agartala. Despite its modest size it is one of the most visited nature destinations in Tripura. The sanctuary is home to over 150 species of resident and migratory birds, including rare orchids, and is designated an Important Bird Area. The clouded leopard, spectacled monkey, and various deer species are among the wildlife. Within the sanctuary is a zoo that houses the state bird and animal of Tripura, a botanical garden, a rubber and coffee plantation, and a lake with boating facilities. Elephant joy rides are available. The sanctuary is one of the few places in northeast India where tourists can experience wildlife, boating, and gardens all in one compact area.
