Vaishno Devi Yatra 2026
Vaishno Devi is one of India’s busiest pilgrimages, and darshan runs through the year. The shrine sits in the Trikuta hills above Katra (Jammu). Most families start in Katra, get the free RFID yatra card, then go up to the Bhawan by foot, pony, palki, helicopter, or a mix with battery car on the upper stretch.

Registration and RFID card
Registration is free and mandatory. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board is the only authorised issuer. Private agents are not authorised for Board services.
What you need
- Register online on maavaishnodevi.org and/or at a Yatra Registration Counter (YRC)
- Collect your RFID Yatra Access Card in person (one card per person; photo is taken at the counter)
- Carry valid photo ID and keep print + phone copies of any online slip
Where to collect RFID (common counters): Katra Bus Stand, Katra Railway Station, Niharika Complex, Serli Helipad, Tarakote, Jammu Airport, Vaishnavi Dham (Jammu). Confirm the latest list on the portal / local boards.
Banganga rule: after the RFID is issued, you generally must cross the Banganga checkpost (about 1.5 km from the main YRC) within about 6 hours. Miss that window and the card can be cancelled, and you may need a fresh one.
Without RFID, you are turned back at Banganga. Helicopter or ropeway booking does not replace the RFID card.
In heavy rush, the Board may pause new registration (“Waiting”) so the hill does not overload. Weekends in May-June, late December, school holidays, and Navratri are common peak periods. Check yatra status before you leave home.

Katra to Bhawan: how people go

Key stops on the official distance list (from Katra): Banganga about 1 km, Adhkuwari about 6 km, Sanjichhat about 9.5 km, Bhawan about 13 km. Bhairon via Bhawan is farther (about 14.5 km total from Katra).
Bhairon Mandir: traditionally visited after darshan at the Holy Cave. Ropeway between Bhawan and Bhairon runs roughly 9 am-5 pm (confirm on the day).
Helicopter (read this before booking)
- Book only on maavaishnodevi.org
- Drop is Sanjichhat, not the cave door. Budget another 45-60 minutes (pace varies) for the remaining stretch on foot / pony / other local options
- Current Board-linked tariff window (16 Oct 2025 - 15 Oct 2026): about ₹2,320 one way and ₹4,640 return (GST included). Confirm live price on the portal
- RFID card is still required
- Weather cancellations: refunds only through designated Board counters (Serli, Sanjichhat, Jammu Airport per Board alerts)
- Do not buy “helicopter tickets” from random WhatsApp / hotel agents

Most groups rest, eat, and finish RFID formalities in Katra before starting the climb. Jammu is the main air/rail hub for the region.
From Delhi / other metros: train or flight into Jammu/Katra, then the hill plan. Do not schedule a tight same-day arrival + full foot climb if the group includes elders or children.
When to visit
- Mar-Jun: popular family weather; weekends get crowded
- Navratri: spiritually peak, very heavy rush; book stay and slips early; expect Waiting
- Monsoon months: track can be slippery; carry rain gear
- Dec-Jan: cold; carry warm layers (Bhawan nights can go near freezing)
The shrine pilgrimage runs year-round, but comfort and queue time change a lot by season and festival.

Practical tips from the Board
- Travel light; leave extra bags in Katra cloakrooms
- Video cameras / video shooting are not allowed on the track
- No liquor, non-veg, or intoxicants on the yatra
- At Bhawan, follow group numbers for the cave queue; do not jump the line
- Only cash and selected offerings inside the Holy Cave; use free cloakrooms for other items
- Heart / BP / asthma: take a doctor’s advice before the climb; stairs are hard for some patients
