Best Time to Visit

The best time for the Sandakphu Trek is April to May and October to November. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons, while autumn generally offers clear skies and excellent Himalayan views. Winter can bring snow and very cold conditions, while the monsoon months are best avoided because of rain, slippery trails and poor visibility.

Stay and Food

Homestays and basic lodges are available at the main overnight stops. Meals are generally simple, with options such as rice, dal, vegetables, noodles and momos. Facilities become more basic as you gain altitude, so carry essential personal items and some snacks.

Important Tips

  • Start early, especially on the day you climb to Sandakphu.
  • Carry identification and complete the required entry and permit formalities.
  • Weather can change quickly, so keep rain and warm layers accessible.
  • Mobile connectivity and other facilities can be limited along the route.
  • Carry enough cash for remote areas where digital payments may not work.
  • Do not litter and follow the rules of Singalila National Park.
  • Avoid rushing on the descent, as some sections can be steep and slippery.

Summary

The Sandakphu Trek takes you through forests, mountain villages and the India-Nepal border before reaching the highest point in West Bengal. With rhododendron-covered trails, changing landscapes and spectacular views of the world's highest mountains, it is a rewarding Himalayan trek for those looking for a moderately challenging adventure.
