Losar, Tawang
Tibetan new year at Tawang Monastery on 7 February 2027, with prayers, butter lamps and family celebrations in the Monpa villages.
Losar, the Tibetan new year, is the most important festival for the Monpa people of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. In 2027 it falls on Sunday 7 February, and celebrations go on for about two weeks, with the first three days the most important.
Before the new year, homes are cleaned and decorated and new prayer flags are hung. On the first day, many families go to Tawang Monastery, the largest monastery in India, to pray and receive blessings, and the monks hold special rituals with butter lamps and offerings. Families then visit friends and relatives, share festive food and local drinks, and take part in traditional dances.
February is cold in Tawang, with snow likely on Sela Pass on the way up from Bomdila, so carry warm clothes and allow extra time for the drive. Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, and foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit.
