Hill Jatra is one of Kumaon's most distinctive folk festivals, rooted in the agrarian traditions of Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand. Originating from the Sorar region of West Nepal, the festival unfolds through masked performances, dramatic re-enactments of paddy plantation, and processional dances dedicated to regional deities. The iconic characters of Lakhiya Bhoot, Hiran Chittal, and Mahakali take centre stage in Kumor village, accompanied by traditional music and folk performances that bring centuries of Kumaoni heritage alive. The festival falls on the Bhadrapada Amavasya, roughly eight days after the Gor Maheshwar festival, with exact timing following the local lunar calendar.
