Galdan Namchot
PastGaldan Namchot is a festival celebrated across Ladakh (and regions of the Himalayas) to honour Je Tsongkhapa - the 14th-century Tibetan Buddhist saint-scholar who founded the Gelug school.
On this day, homes, monasteries and public buildings are illuminated with butter-lamps and candles, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and the ushering in of hope, wisdom and new beginnings. Families and communities come together to pray, offer butter-lamp rituals, and enjoy traditional Ladakhi food like thukpa, momos, and butter tea.
People also exchange a ceremonial scarf called a khatak - a gesture of respect, goodwill and blessings. Galdan Namchot also marks the start of New Year celebrations in Ladakh, setting the tone for a season of festivity, hope, and community spirit.
