Gujarati New Year on 10 November: temple Annakut food offerings and first darshan across Ahmedabad.
Bestu Varas (also written Bestu Varsh or Nutan Varsh) is the Gujarati New Year. In Gujarat this Kartik Shukla Pratipada day is Bestu Varas, and the temple food offering is simply called Annakut. Elsewhere in north India the same day is known as Govardhan Puja.
Families dress up, visit temples for first darshan of the year, and greet elders. Temples heap many vegetarian dishes before the deity for Annakut, later shared as prasad.
In 2026 Bestu Varas and Annakut fall on Tuesday 10 November. DrikPanchang lists Gujarati New Year, Govardhan Puja and Annakut on that date. Across Ahmedabad, Swaminarayan temples (including Kalupur and BAPS centres) are well known for large Annakut displays. Other Vaishnava and community temples also put out food offerings. Exact board timings vary by temple; check the notice board when you arrive.
Expect busy morning queues at popular mandirs, festive dress on the streets, and family gatherings through the day. Entry to temple Annakut darshan is typically free. Dress modestly, remove footwear, and be ready for security checks at larger complexes. If you want a quieter visit, go mid morning after the first rush, or choose a neighbourhood temple rather than the biggest city shrines.
Stay near Ashram Road, CG Road or the old city if you plan several temple stops. Autos and the metro help you move between areas when festival traffic builds.
