The Sweet Story of Gangaur Festival

Jai Mata Gauri! Har Har Mahadev!
Gangaur is a very special festival that celebrates the true love story of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (also called Gauri). It reminds us of strong devotion, pure love, and blessings for a happy married life.
The Main Love Story
Long, long ago, Goddess Parvati loved Lord Shiva deeply. But Lord Shiva was lost in deep meditation high in the mountains. He was not interested in marriage or worldly life.
Parvati did not lose hope.
She went to the cold, snowy Himalayas.
She did very strict tapasya (penance) — eating almost nothing, bearing heat and cold, and praying day and night:
“Shiva… Shiva…” with full love and faith.
Years passed, but her bhakti never stopped. Finally, Lord Shiva was touched by her pure love and strong devotion. He opened his eyes, accepted her, and married her.
From that day, Parvati became known as Gauri — the perfect, loving wife of Shiva.
Their marriage is the beautiful symbol of happy and long suhaag (married life).
The Sweet Village Story People Tell During Gangaur
One day, Lord Shiva, Goddess Gauri (Parvati), and Narad Muni came down to Earth for a walk. They reached a small village.
The poor women of the village saw them and knew they were Gods. They had very little, but they offered whatever they could — some water, wild fruits, and simple flowers — with full respect and true love.
Shiva and Gauri were very happy with their pure devotion. Gauri took some water in her hand, turned it into holy amrit (nectar), and sprinkled it on the women.
She blessed them:
“May your husbands live long.
May your marriage stay happy and strong forever.
May your homes be full of peace and joy.”
Later, the richer women of the village also came. They offered tasty food and fancy dishes to the divine couple.
Gauri was pleased with their devotion too. (In some versions of the story, she even used her own power to bless them with the same good fortune.)
Because of this beautiful story, women in Rajasthan and many other places celebrate Gangaur every year.
How Women Celebrate Gangaur Today
- They make lovely clay or wooden idols of Gauri and Isar (Shiva) at home.
- They do puja every day with love and bhajans.
- Many keep fast (vrat) with full shraddha.
- They sing traditional songs and take out colourful processions (shobha yatra).
- Married women pray: “May my suhaag stay forever strong.”
- Unmarried girls pray: “May I get a good, loving husband like Shiva.”
Gangaur is not just a festival.
It is a sweet reminder of true love, strong bhakti, and God’s blessings for a happy family and home.
